Indian government crisis deepens
The crisis surrounding the Indian government over a bribery scandal has deepened, as a key coalition partner withdrew and the president of another prominent ally resigned her post.
Meanwhile, India's State run television reports that the Defence Minister George Fernandes has resigned in the wake of the bribery scandal.
However, there are no further details.
The scandal erupted after journalists posed as arms dealers to expose corruption in defence procurement circles, with senior politicians, civil servants and army officers being filmed apparently taking bribes.
The federal railways minister and leader of the Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee, says her party had decided to pull out of the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
At the same time, the president of another coalition ally, the Samata Party, announced she was resigning.
