UN says foot and mouth present in East Timor

The United Nations Transitional Authority in East Timor says it's likely foot and mouth disease is present in the country.

The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service is working with UNTAET to establish a quarantine service in East Timor which is preparing to import 2,000 head of cattle and buffalo from Indonesia.

UNTAET's Director of Agricultural Affairs Serge Verniau says there've been no diagnosed cases of the disease in East Timor, but the disease is common throughout the Asian region where animals have grown resistant to it.

Foot and mouth disease is in East Timor most probably because it has always been like that since I would say decades but it's not a problem as it could be in developed countries.
