China says Taiwan vice president colluding with Falungong
China claims Taiwan's Vice President Annette Lu is using the Falungong spiritual movement which is banned on the mainland, to promote the island's formal independence. In a commentary, the official Xinhua news agency said the Falungong and pro-independence activists were joining hands to support one another. Xinhua said Ms Lu lent public backing to the Buddhist-inspired sect by speaking at a Falungong event in Taipei in December. The Chinese government banned the Falungong in July 1999, and sees it as its biggest threat since the 1989 pro-democracy movement. Falungong claims about 100,000 followers in Taiwan, having seen a sharp rise in membership since it was banned on the mainland.
