Sri Lanka to announce Tiger talks by end of April
Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister says Colombo will announce a timetable for peace talks with Tamil Tiger rebels later this month.
The Foreign Minister told parliament that he was unable to give details of the status of the Norweigan-backed peace process, but the government hoped to make a full statement on it before the end of this month.
His remarks came as the government appeared set to enter into a "agreement of understanding" with the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as a prelude to opening peace talks aimed at ending decades of ethnic bloodshed.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga had announced in February that there could be a preliminary round of talks with the LTTE within about two months.
There had been speculation of possible talks at an European city within a few months, if not weeks.
