Japan expects to have a new Prime Minister by the end of the month

Japan will have a new Prime Minister by the end of the month.

As Peter Martin reports from Tokyo, Yoshiro Mori has asked his party to select a replacement within the next three weeks.

Yoshiro Mori says he wants his replacement in the job before "golden week", Japan's week of special public holidays at the start of May. His party is expected to call for nominations next Wednesday. Japan's new Prime Minister will have three months in which to turn around a near certain defeat for Japan's governing party in upper house elections due at the end of July. Prime Minister Mori's popularity rating has fallen to seven per cent. He's been in the top job for one year today.
