Chinese citizen jailed in US for attempting to export missile parts
A Chinese citizen has been sentenced in the United States to two and a half years in jail for trying to illegally export parts for missile guidance systems to China.
Prosecutors say Yao Yi, president of the Beijing-based company Lion Photonics, tried to ship fiberoptic gyroscopes, which can be used in missile and aircraft guidance systems and smart bombs, without required U.S. State Department permits.
Export of the gyroscopes to China is not allowed.
Prosecutors say Yao and Collin Xu, a Canadian citizen, were caught when they contacted undercover U.S. Customs agents in the Boston area who posed as export brokers.
The two men are said to have planned to use their Canadian subsidiary, Lion Photonics Canada, to ship the gyroscopes to China.
