US and Chinese negotiators prepare for spy talks
American and Chinese negotiators are preparing for their first meeting on the spy plane row, with Washington vowing to win the return of its aircraft stranded for more than two weeks in southern China.
Washington's Ambassador in Beijing, Joseph Prueher, has confirmed the talks are to be held, but refused to comment on the negotiations prompted by the collision between the U-S plane on a surveillance flight off the Chinese coast and a Chinese F-8 fighter jet.
Last week, China released the 24-member crew which landed on Hainan island after the collision, but has kept the plane pending further discussions.
A White House spokesman Ari Fleischer has said President George W-Bush has directed the Pentagon-led team ask tough questions about what Washington sees as Chinese harassment of its surveillance flights.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman has said following the talks, Beijing would determine the fate of the U-S aircraft.
