International scholars appeal to China for colleagues' freedom
Nearly 400 scholars from around the world have appealed to Chinese President Jiang Zemin for the release of three Hong Kong-based researchers detained by China's state security police.
One... business professor Li Shaomin .... is an American citizen, while sociologist Gao Zhan and historian Xu Zerong have close links to the United States.
In an open letter to the Chinese leader, the signatories described the detentions as "a gross violation" of Beijing's own laws as well as its commitment to abide by international human rights treaties.
The scholars also said by raising fears of arrest among those doing research on China, the Chinese government threatened academic exchanges.
Presented at a New York news conference, the letter called on President Jiang to either immediately release the scholars or promptly give them the opportunity to defend themselves in court with international standards of due process.
