China cracks down on illegal possession of explosives
China has launched a nationwide crackdown on the illegal possession of explosives in an attempt to curb a wave of bombings that has swept across the country and killed hundreds in recent months
The state-controlled China Daily newspaper says the campaign will target people who illegally own or deal in explosives and firearms.
The paper says offenders who turn themselves in within the first month of the campaign are likely to be treated leniently, while those apprehended afterwards will suffer "serious punishment."
The campaign was launched on the same day that a court in northern city of Shijiazhuang handed down four death sentences over a series of blasts in mid-March that killed 108 people.
