India and Bangladesh express regret over troop deaths

India and Bangladesh have expressed regret at the death of 18 frontier guards from both sides in their worst border clash for 30 years.

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Raminder Jassal also said both Dhaka and New Delhi had pledged to exercise restraint to prevent a recurrence of such violence between the two normally friendly neighbours.

The comments came amid reports of a flurry of diplomatic and military contacts to defuse tensions on the India-Bangladesh borders which peaked on Wednesday with the death of the soldiers.

The dispute centres around what is known as "adverse possession land" -- land that after demarcation of the border should have been settled one way or the other, but is being held by one side while being inhabited by citizens of the other.

Minor skirmishes are relatively common between the two South Asian neighbours, which share a four-thousand kilometre border.
