Taiwan's bid for WHO observer status blocked by China
Taiwan's bid to gain observer status in the World Health Organization has been blocked for the fifth time by rival China.
A group of Taiwan's diplomatic allies proposed granting Taiwan observer status in the organization, but China rallied its supporters to block the issue from being included on the agenda of the World Health Assembly, which brings together WHO's members each year in Geneva.
Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said it was regrettable that the island was shut out of the agency because the bid had gained support in the United States and several European nations.
The Taiwanese pledged to renew the bid so the island could contribute to medical aid and other world health matters.
