Nepal lifts curfew
Authorities in Nepal have lifted a curfew on the capital Kathmandu, as soldiers patrol the streets, ready to crack down on any repetition of the riots which followed last Friday's deaths of most of the royal family.
Police say the city is calm following the second curfew in two days imposed in a bid to stifle public rage over the lack of an official explanation for the carnage which claimed the lives of Nepal's King Birendra and nine other royals. An inquiry into the deaths, announced by the new King Gyanendra, failed to get underway yesterday when the main opposition United Marxist Leninist party objected to way the body was set up and refused to take part.
The deaths of the royal family members were at first blamed on King Birendra's eldest son Crown Prince Dipendra, but state radio later said a freak accident was responsible, with an automatic weapon exploding - a version dismissed by ballistics experts.
