Indonesian MPs' perks criticised
Indonesian MPs have been criticised for receiving perks that include a 520 U-S dollar allowance to buy a washing machine.
Asmara Nababan of the National Commission on Human Rights calls the perks "an insult to the suffering of the country's poor".
He says while beggars live and sleep on the streets, the government is paying for washing machines for MPs.
Other perks include an annual three thousand U-S dollar "communications" allowance.
Kompas reports that the combined value of the two allowances is one-point-seven million U-S dollars.
The newspaper says the MPs also receive free electricity, water and phones in their homes, and assistance in paying home renovations, medical bills and car installments.
