South Korea asks China to free North Koreans
South Korea has called on China to give asylum to a family of seven North Koreans.
The family has sought refuge at a U-N office in Beijing, demanding refugee status and safe passage to Seoul.
The seven include an elderly couple, their children and their teenage grandchildren.
The South Korean foreign ministry has set up a task force to follow the case of the North Korean family, which is threatening to become embarrassing for Beijing authorities. China traditionally does not recognise people who cross from North Korea as refugees and sends them back as economic migrants.
Human rights group have accused China of forcibly returning thousands of North Koreans fleeing famine and oppression.
