Chinese President calls for new world order in Moscow
Chinese President Jiang Zemin has called for a new world order, and has warned the United States that it risks unleashing a new arms race through its missile defence plans.
President Jiang made the comments on the third day of a state visit to Russia, which has seen the two countries sign an historic friendship treaty.
In a speech at Moscow University that was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Chinese leader said Beijing and Moscow bear a major responsibility for maintaining world peace.
He said the development of new cutting-edge weapons systems will only start a new arms race and endanger world peace. China and Russia have led opposition to US plans to build a space-based missile defence shield to ward off incoming missile attacks from so-called "rogue states" such as North Korea and Iraq.
They say it violates the landmark 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
