Australian PM to meet new Indonesian leader

Australian Prime Minister John Howard will meet the newly-elected Indonesian President, Megawati Sukarnoputri in Jakarta later this month.

Mr Howard says he will visit Indonesia on the 12th of August.

The Prime Minister says he's pleased the meeting has been arranged so quickly.

It will probably be in advance of any of the meetings with other leaders in the region. I think it's a very important signal that both the President of Indonesia and the Prime Minister of Australia are looking very much to the future. We have had some difficulties in the relationship, but it's very good that we can meet at such an early date.
