Japan moves to cushion impact of job cuts

The Japanese Government is being urged to employ more people in the public sector to cushion the impact of economic reforms promised by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

The minister for economic and fiscal policy Heizo Takenaka says drastic employment measures need to be included in a three-step programme for implementing Prime Minister Koizumi's structural reforms.

He says as the employment situation deteriorates, Japan will need a new-type of public employment, in which the government hires people directly rather than relying on private firms to employ more staff.

Japan's jobless rate in June stood at a record high for the second consecutive month at 4.9 percent, or 3.38 million people.

Mr Koizumi is expected to announce details of his reform package later this month.
