Positive results from a meeting of Australian and Indonesian leaders
Australia's Prime Minister John Howard has strongly backed the new Indonesian government of President Megawati Sukarnoputri and says both countries have agreed to look to the future rather than dwell on past disputes.
The two nations fell out over Australia's perceived support for East Timor's independence vote and its leadership of a peacekeeping force deployed there in 1999 following a campaign of terror by Indonesian-backed militias.
Mr Howard, the first Western leader to meet Megawati since her appointment on July 23, also held talks with senior legislators.
He said his discussions with Megawati were frank and the outcome of the meeting will contribute to a strong, positive but realistic relationship between neighbours.
