Prosecutors indict nine for extermination policies in East Timor
United Nations prosecutors in East Timor have filed the first indictments, for extermination, against nine militiamen and two Indonesian soldiers.
Officials say the indictments relate to crimes committed after the territory seceded from Indonesia.
The U-N prosecutor general says suspects are accused of targeting 65 people in the isolated East Timorese enclave of Oecussi and murdering them in two massacres in September, 1999.
The prosecutor general, Mohamed Othman, says it's significant as it is the first indictment for extermination.
He says the suspects are believed to be in Indonesia.
More than one-thousand people were murdered and more than 80-percent of East Timor's infrastructure destroyed by pro-Jakarta militias after the territory voted for independence in the UN-sponsored ballot.
