ASEAN to adopt common strategy on terrorism
The leaders of Southeast Asia are preparing to adopt a common strategy to combat terrorism amid concern over the potential threat posed by growing Islamic militancy.
The ten leaders of ASEAN are set to meet in Brunei this week to call for the creation of a so-called "ASEAN troika" to strengthen regional cooperation in combating terrorism. Prospective members of the troika will reportedly include the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. The leaders of Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are also considering having standard procedures.
The ASEAN leaders are also expected to jointly condemn the terrorist attacks in the United States last month.
However they are split on the US-led retaliatory strikes against Osama bin Laden and the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan.
