Indonesian police have detained at least one people smuggler understood to have arranged the voyage in which more than 350 asylum seekers drowned on their way to Australia.

The AFP news agency says authorities are holding a Jakarta-based Egyptian man who is believed to have arranged the journey of a boat carrying more than 400 people which sank last month.

The man was detained in the western Javanese city of Bandung.
