America welcomes the entry of China and Taiwan to the WTO
The United States has welcomed China and Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization, saying the move will lead to global economic growth and democratic reforms by Beijing.
US President George W. Bush says development will strengthen the global trading system and lead to an open Chinese economy which will be an important underpinning for Chinese democratic reforms.
Speaking after signing Beijing's WTO accession documents, Chinese Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng said his country will become an official member of the World Trade Organization on December 11.
A consensus decision by the 142 WTO members to admit China was taken in Qatar Saturday, ending Beijing's 15-year struggle to become part of the global trading system.
Taiwan secured admission to the world trade body, gaining the unanimous approval of members, barely 24 hours after.
It's preparing to sign the accession agreement and will become a member 30 days after it presents articles of ratification.
