Nepal declares state of emergency following Maoist attacks
Nepal has declared a state of emergency following Maoist attacks which have left more than 280 people dead.
A royal palace statement read out on state radio said King Gyanendra imposed the state of emergency with immediate effect, in accordance with the constitution.
The statement said the emergency was announced to maintain law and order in the country following the violence unleashed by the Maoists.
It said that under the declaration, the army has been ordered to mobilise across the country.
The Maoist attacks on police and army posts across Nepal began on Friday, bringing to a bloody end a four-month ceasefire with the government.
More than 2,000 people have died in violence since the rebels began their campaign in 1996 to overthrow the monarchy and establish a Maoist republic.
