Northern Territory Chief Minister to visit Jakarta next month

The Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory, Clare Martin, and her Business and Industry Minister, Paul Henderson, plan to visit Jakarta next month.

Lorraine Davies reports that on Ms Martin's first visit to the Indonesian capital as Chief Minister, she hopes to meet President Megawati Sukarnoputri:

"Former C-L-P Chief Ministers have had easy access to Indonesia's past presidents and Cabinet Ministers. Ten years ago, Indonesia signed its first Memorandum of Understanding with a regional government - rather than a national one - when it signed an M-O-U with the Territory on economic co-operation and development. The visit next month is expected to mark that anniversary. Under the M-O-U the Territory built up trade ties with eastern Indonesia until Indonesia was affected by the Asian economic crisis and political uncertainty. A joint policy committee set up under the M-O-U is expected to meet early next year to consider future directions."
