US special forces end nine hour assault against al-Qaeda gunmen

United States special forces have hurled grenades through the windows of a burning hospital in Kandahar, to end a nine-hour assault against al-Qaeda gunmen.

The gunmen have been holed up nearly two months, vowing never to be captured alive.

The pre-dawn operation -- launched by US and Afghan forces supported by helicopters -- ended when American troops threw 16 grenades through the windows.

Afghan police commanders say all of the gunmen are dead.

The assault had dragged on for nearly nine hours when the Americans came out of cover to toss in the grenades.
