Australia's Governor General farewells veterans on visit to Singapore

Australia's Governor General Peter Hollingworth has farewelled a group of war veterans and widows on their visit to Singapore to mark the 60th anniversary of the allied surrender of the city to Japan.

The official Australian mission of 24 World War Two veterans and four war widows is due to leave Sydney later today.

They'll visit several sites of battles during the defence of the Malay Peninsula and the eventual fall of Singapore on February the 15th 1942.

At a ceremony in Sydney, Dr Hollingworth has remembered the casualities of the Malayan campaign and the 15-thousand Australians taken as prisoners of war by the Japanese in Singapore.

This week's 60th anniversary is an opportunity for all Australians to honour those who fought in Malaya and Singapore and to remember the suffering and sacrifice of our prisoners of war in the years that followed.
