Cambodian government says it has three options on Khmer Rouge trial
Cambodia's government is considering what it can do with a trial of leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime after UN Secretary General Kofi Annan confirmed a decision to withdraw from preparations for the trial.
The UN action has left the government with three options.
It can press the UN to restart negotiations, proceed with a foreign-assisted trial, or hold the trial alone. Efforts to put surviving leaders of Pol Pot's 1975-79 regime in the dock for crimes against humanity and the deaths of up to 1.7 million people struck its biggest hurdle when the UN withdrew.
The UN's legal counsel, Hans Corell, says Cambodia's inability to guarantee the independence, impartiality and objectivity for a UN-backed court forced the world body out.
