Indonesian bank governor found guilty of corruption
An Indonesian court has found central bank governor Syahril Sabirin guilty of corruption over the 1999 Bank Bali scandal and ordered him jailed for three years. Chief judge Subardi at Central Jakarta district court said Syahril Sabirin had committed corruption, causing a loss of 90 million dollars to the state.
Two other defendants in the scandal had previously been cleared of graft after separate trials.
Sabirin said he would appeal and would not resign his post.
He was not immediately taken to jail pending a judicial order to execute the sentence.
The scandal led the International Monetary Fund and World Bank temporarily to suspend loans to Indonesia and was one factor in President B.J. Habibie's decision not to seek re-election in October 1999.
