Japan celebrates blooming of cherry blossoms

Japan is celebrating the earliest blooming of cherry blossoms since official monitoring of the phenomena began in 1953.

The announcement came in a brief communique from Japan's Meteorological Agency and was flashed by major news agencies and television networks nationwide.

The appearance of the first cherry blossoms in Tokyo and across Japan generally is a cause for national celebration.
