Indonesian Parliamentary Speaker faces trial next week
Indonesia says Parliamentary Speaker, Akbar Tanjung, will stand trial next week.
Amid protests by thousands of supporters and opponents of Mr Tanjung, the central Jakarta district court says the trial on abuse of power and graft charges will start on March the 25th.
Mr Tanjung has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in the case, which centres around the alleged misuse of some eight-million dollars from the state food agency Bulog.
He has rejected calls for his resignation, despite protests by around 15-hundred people outside the parliament building where they confronted some 500 supporters of the Golkar party which Mr Tanjung leads.
The pro-Golkar demonstrators oppose moves to set up a parliamentary probe into the case.
