Taiwan's premier appoints new economic minister

Taiwan's Premier Yu Shyi-kun has named senior economic official Lin Yi-fu as economic minister following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor Christine Tsung after less than two months in the job.

Mr Lin, previously the vice economic minister, has worked in the economic ministry for 36 years.

Ms Tsung tendered her resignation amid strong criticism of her ability to steer the country's economic policies.

Taiwan's gross domestic product in 2001 suffered its first ever contraction of almost two-percent after being battered by the global slowdown exacerbated by the September terror attacks in the United States.
