Laos makes extradition request to Thailand for border raiders

The Laotian government has lodged a request with Thailand for the extradition of 16 Lao nationals, accused of mounting a bloody cross-border raid in July, 2000.

The Lao embassy in Bangkok says it's waiting for a response to the application, filed after a Thai court sentenced the group for illegal entry after they fled across the border in the aftermath of the raid.

A 60-strong band of mostly emigre Lao occupied customs buildings at the border station, until Lao troops ended the siege with an assault that killed at least five rebels and drove dozens more into Thailand.
