US pulls out diplomatic staff from Pakistan

The United States is pulling out most of its diplomatic staff from Pakistan, after the church bombing earlier in the week which killed five people, including the wife and step-daughter of a US official.

State Department spokesman Philip Reeker has also warned Americans in Pakistan to consider leaving or to keep a low profile if they decide to remain.

The US has assured Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf the move does not reflect a lack of confidence in Pakistan's ability to protect Americans.

Mr Reeker says only emergency US diplomatic staff will stay in the country.

After a careful review of our security posture in Pakistan, the Department has decided to move to an ordered departure of all dependents and non-emergency personnel at our embassy in Islamabad and our consulates in Pakistan.
