Thailand seals Burmese border
Thailand has sealed off part of its northern border with Burma and sent in several hundred troop reinforcements after a series of clashes with ethnic fighters.
The A-F-P newsagency says Thailand's Third Army, which patrols the troubled far north region, closed the border in a bid to wipe out rebel forces that sparked two bloody firefights over the past week.
A-F-P says the closure is temporary.
A Thai army spokesman says an extra battalion of 700 troops is being rotated in to ensure high levels of security.
The closure of a border gate, north of Thailand's second largest city Chiang Mai, followed a gunbattle on Monday that left left one Thai soldier dead and another injured.
