Taiwan deals with the effect of an earthquake which killed four people Authorities in Taiwan will this morning begin a safety assessment of what will be the world's tallest building after a deadly earthquake hit the capital over the weekend. At least two hundred people were injured when the earthquake hit the island, an area prone to destructive quakes. Three workers and a taxi driver were killed at the construction site of the half-completed Taipei Financial Centre when two cranes fell to the street from the 53rd floor. Taipei's mayor Ma Ying-jeou says a safety check will take place before work is allowed resume on the one-hundred storey building. The main south-north freeway is still partly closed, but key industrial sectors near the capital were unaffected and a government spokesman says Taipei's financial markets will open today.
