Afghanistan's former King ready to return to Kabul

Afghanistan's former king Mohammed Zahir Shah is preparing to embark on a long-awaited return to his homeland amid tight security over fears for his life.

The former monarch has spent 29 years in exile in Rome.

Zahir Shah is to be accompanied by Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai who arrived in Rome to bring the 87-year-old ex-king back to his country as it struggles to restore normalcy.

Mr Karzai says the return of former monarch Mohammed Zahir Shah to his homeland was a sign that peace had returned to Afghanistan.
