China reacts to Japanese PM's visit to war shrine

China has criticised a second visit by the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to a controversial shrine which commemorates Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals.

News bulletins have denounced the visit as insensitive to the feelings of all Asian people who suffered at the hands of Japan's wartime aggression.

China correspondent Tom O'Byrne reports

A statement from China's Foreign Ministry condemning Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine was read out on all major television broadcasts. In it an official spokesman said the Chinese government remained resolutely opposed to any effort that glorified Japan's war time leaders. Japan's invasion and occupation of China, ahead of its entry into the second world war remains an issue of accute sensitivity in China, despite an apology last year from Prime Minister Koizumi to the Chinese people. The two countries mark 30-years of bi-lateral ties this September.
