US announces return to dialogue with North Korea
The White House has announced that it is working out "the timing and other details" of renewed talks with North Korea after Pyongyang said it was prepared to open discussions.
The apparent agreement to return to the negotiating table sets the stage for efforts to thaw dialogue -- frozen since US President George W. Bush took office last year -- between the Cold War rivals. US officials say the breakthrough came when North Korea's Permanent Mission to the United Nations informed the US State Department that it was prepared to begin talks with the United States.
On Monday, senior US officials said that the United States had accepted North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il's invitation to send an envoy to Pyongyang.
