Environmentalists to challenge Indonesia over llegal log shipments

Two environmental watchdog groups say they'll challenge Indonesian police over their release of three Chinese ships allegedly caught carrying illegal logs.

The London-based Environmental Investigation Agency says the head of the national police detectives has said that there was no evidence that the ships were carrying illegal logs.

However, the agency says the ships were caught red-handed by the navy, and the logs were still on board.

The three ships were caught by the Indonesian navy off the coast of Borneo in November last year carrying over 25,000 cubic meters of timber.

Indonesia imposed a log export ban in October 2001.
