Bikini ban slows tourism to eastern Malaysia
A ban on bikinis in two of Malaysia's Islamic-ruled states has cut tourist numbers to the country.
Tourism Minister Abdul Kadir says a drop in visits was expected after the September attacks on the United States, but these rulings have made the situation even worse.
He says tour agents in Europe are recommending their clients do not visit Malaysia, as they fear being sued for not providing a conducive holidaying atmosphere.
Tourism is a key foreign exchange earner for Malaysia.
Mr Abdul Kadir says the bikini ban has been widely reported by the international media who failed to specify that the ruling applies only to Terengganu and Kelantan states, ruled by an Islamic party.
