Indian Parliament passes bill urging federal intervention in Gujarat
The upper house of India's parliament hasunanimously passed an opposition-sponsored motion urging federal intervention in the western state of Gujarat to quell sectarian riots that have claimed more than 900 lives.
The motion was passed by voice vote, a week after the federal government defeated a more directly critical censure motion by 94 votes in the elected lower house, where it outnumbers the opposition.
The government is in a minority in the upper house.
During the debate, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee promised effective steps to halt the continued communal bloodletting in Gujarat, but rejected opposition demands to sack the state chief minister, Narendra Modi.
Muslims have been the main victims of the Gujarat riots which followed a February 27 attack on a train carrying Hindu activists that left 58 dead.
