Supercop Gill to quell Gujarat sectarian violence
India is sending 2-thousand anti-riot troopers and elite commandos to Gujarat to help put down an eruption of sectarian violence that has claimed more than 900 lives.
They'll be under the command of so-called supercop K.P.S. Gill credited with ending a Sikh separatist campaign in Punjab that claimed 50-thousand lives in the 1980s. The Indian government recalled Gill from retirement and appointed him security advisor to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has come under domestic and international criticism for failing to end one of India's worst outbreaks of sectarian violence. The Gujarat's police department has also been blamed for playing a partisan role in the riots which have largely targetted Muslims. The riots were sparked by the torching of a train carrying Hindu activists, by a mob of about one-thousand alleged Muslims in February
