Al-Qaeda fighters reportedly still in Pakistan
The major remaining concentrations of Al-Qaeda fighters are reportedly hiding in western Pakistan rather than in Afghanistan.
The Washington Post reports there are several hundred Al-Qaeda fighters in one border town. However, the report says, Islamabad has resisted American pressure to launch large-scale attacks on them.
U-S Defence officials say the Pakistani military has been moving very slowly, despite U-S offers to provide intelligence, helicopters, and Special Operations troops. Pakistani officials say they fear an internal political backlash from Islamic extremists across the nation, if they take military action against the suspected al-Qaeda pockets. They also say they lack confidence in U-S intelligence reports.
