Japan's mad cow disease infects another animal, inspector suicides
A health official involved in Japan's mad cow scare has committed suicide after helping detect the country's fourth case of the brain-wasting disease.
The suicide was announced by the prefectural government of Hokkaido, where a government-appointed panel of experts has confirmed that a fourth cow has been infected.
It's not known if the 29-year-old female committed suicide because of her link to the mad cow inspection.
In September Japan became the only country in Asia known to harbour the disease which can infect humans and rot their brains.
Inspectors have tested all cows slaughtered for beef since October, two more cases were found in November.
Mad cow disease was first identified in cattle in Britain in 1986. It's believed to have been first transmitted to humans around 1996.
