ASEAN ministers prepare to meet on possible anti-terror pact
Southeast Asian interior ministers are expected to meet in Malaysia next week to consider drafting a regional accord on cross-border cooperation and anti-terrorism.
Three members of the Association of South East Asian Countries -- Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines -- signed a similar pact last week.
But officials say when the interior ministers meet in Kuala Lumpur they'll be deciding whether all ten ASEAN members should have a convention on anti-terrorism operations to improve coordination and intelligence sharing.
ASEAN deputy secretary-general Ahmad Mokhtar Selat has told journalist there is a recommendation for an operational convention on terrorism.
But he says it's too early to say whether last week's three-nation pact could form the basis of an ASEAN-wide agreement.
ASEAN leaders pledged closer cooperation in the fight against global terror networks at a summit in Brunei last November.
