Burma proposes meeting with Thailand and Laos to fight drugs
Burma has proposed a ministerial meeting with Thailand and Laos to pinpoint effective ways to fight drug trafficking.
Burma has proposed the talks be held in June or July. The announcement follows the release of a new U-S State Department anti-narcotics report which says Burma is now the world's largest producer of illicit opium following the destruction of poppy fields in Afghanistan. The report says Burma is also the primary source of amphetamine-type stimulants in Asia.
Burma has admitted that it's finding it difficult to battle drug planting activities due to a lack of funds.
But it says the international community, including ASEAN, has a duty to help in the war against drugs.
