The new East Timorese parliament holds its first vote

Politicians in the new East Timorese parliament have held their first vote, making a unanimous decision to join the United Nations.

Eighty-six MPs voted in favour, while two members were absent.

The President Xanana Gusmao signed the resolution and then handed the document to the U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Senator Bob Brown from the Australian Greens political party was in parliament for the vote and says there was a standing ovation afterwards.

And in turn Kofi Annan told the gathered parliamentarians that he could see no impediment and he was absolutely sure that East Timor would within months be the 190th member of the United Nations.
