Reports of police firing on protestors in Papua

A human rights activist says two people have been injured when police opened fire to disperse dozens of protesters occupying an airport in Indonesia's Papua province.

Aloysius Renwarin says about 50 people burned tyres on the runway of the airport in Wamena district on Monday night after a deputy speaker of the local council, Gabril Legowan, missed a plane that was to have taken him to the provincial capital Jayapura.

He told the A-F-P newsagency that police arrived at the airport to disband the crowd but met with resistance, two people were wounded, one critically, when police opened fire.

Wamena airport remained closed Tuesday morning.
