Top Chinese official served with torture writ
China's banned Falungong spiritual group has served a writ on one of the most senior members of the country's ruling Communist Party, alleging torture and genocide.
Ding Guangen, a politburo member and head of publicity for the Communist Party's central committee, was served with papers during a stopover in Hawaii last week.
He's the fifth top Chinese official to be served with such a writ in the United States.
American legislation allows jurisdiction over any assets that are held in the country by named individuals.
But it does not provide for jurisdiction over their person, and cannot prevent them leaving.
The sponsors of the case say it's important because it reaches one of the few people who are alleged to have direct responsibility for the campaign of persecution against Falungong practitioners. Chinese officials have denounced such cases as publicity stunts.
