Australian Government under pressure to donate to East Timor Police

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute says the Australian Government should donate 30-million dollars to the East Timor Police Service over the next five years to ensure security in the region.

At the Northern Territory University in Darwin, the Institute's Elsina Wainwright today launched a study on security and defence issues relating to the new nation.

Dr Wainwright says the key finding of the two-month study -- completed on East Timor's Independence Day on May the 20th -- was that efficient policing would require an injection of cash.

Our key finding I suppose is that we should give police priority. The East Timor police service is under-funded, it lacks equipment and it is relatively poorly trained, so what we would recommend is that the Australian government give the East Timor Police Service about, donate about 30 million dollars in aid over the next five or so years which is roughly the amount we're spending on defence force assistance at the moment.
